How to Get Rid of Head Lice

LICE911 supports the Wet-Combing Method of removal as the safest, easiest and most effective method to eliminate lice. This method focuses on breaking up the life cycle by manually removing all live lice and nits. Any lice that hatch after the first session, are removed with each subsequent comb-out and long before they have a chance to reproduce.

On the first day you start treatment, that's the day to do your cleaning. Live lice die within 48 hours off the head so we want you to focus your cleaning only on areas where the infested person has been in the last 2 days. You do not have to clean the entire house every day.

There is no need to freeze or bag items. Placing items in a hot dryer for 20 minutes will kill any live lice. Items that cannot be dried can simply be set aside for 2 days. Combs, brushes, hair accessories, and lice combs can be cleaned by washing them in hot water (65 degrees) for 10 minutes. You can vacuum any upholstered furniture, booster seats and car seats.

The chemical approach involves applying over-the-counter treatments sold as lotions, creme rinses or shampoos to the scalp, leaving them on for a period of time, then rinsing off. These products do not kill all the nits and you will still need to comb them out with a good lice comb. Follow the manufacturer's directions carefully when choosing these products as these are potentially harmful chemicals and are absorbed directly into the scalp.

NIX or Kwellada-P Cream Rinse: Use with caution in children under 2 years old. Do not use if you are allergic to ragweed or chrysanthemum plants. Active Ingredient is 1% Permethrin with approx. 96% effectiveness and has a low absorption rate.

R & C Shampoo and Conditioner: Do not use if you are allergic to ragweed or chrysanthemum plants. Active ingredients are Pyrethrins & piperonyl butoxide. Has minimal absorption rate and is about 45% effective.

Lindane Shampoo: Do not use if you have seizure disorders or inflamed skin conditions, children under 10 years old, elderly, pregnant or breastfeeding women. Extreme care should be used when choosing this method as it can have up to a 10% absorption rate. This method is about 67% effective and excessive applications are discouraged. Active ingredient is Gamma benzene Hexachloride. More information on Lindane here.

Resultz: Do not use in children under 4 years old, if you have skin irritations or infections. Use caution if pregnant or breastfeeding. This product is not 100% effective and may leave the hair feeling greasy afterwards. Care should be used as this product can stain clothing and make floors and bathtubs extremely slippery.

Regardless of which treatment method you choose, manually removing all lice and nits is critical to ensure complete removal!
